Planning a trip to Ghana? Whether you’re travelling for tourism, business or study, it’s essential to understand the visa requirements before you arrive. Ghana enforces strict entry rules, so be prepared with the correct documentation and follow each step carefully.
1. Visa Categories
- Tourist Visa – Short stays for sightseeing, family visits or leisure.
- Business Visa – Meetings, conferences, trade fairs and commercial activities.
- Student Visa – Enrolment in a recognized Ghanaian educational institution.
- Work Visa – Employment by a Ghanaian company or NGO.
- Transit Visa – Passing through Ghana en route to another country (usually valid for 7 days).
2. Who Needs a Visa?
- ECOWAS nationals (such as Nigeria, Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire) do not require a visa to enter Ghana.
- Citizens of most other countries must apply for a visa prior to travel.
- Some nationalities may be eligible for Visa on Arrival (VoA) for limited purposes—check with the Ghana Immigration Service.
3. Required Documents
Prepare the following items and ensure all copies are clear:
- Valid Passport (minimum 6 months validity beyond entry date + at least 2 blank pages)
- Completed visa application form (available from the Ghana Embassy or Ghana Immigration Service)
- Two recent passport-sized photographs (white background)
- Travel itinerary or round-trip flight reservation
- Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter from host in Ghana)
- Evidence of sufficient funds (bank statements, sponsorship letter)
- Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate (mandatory for all travelers over 9 months old)
- Invitation letter (for business/visit visas) stating purpose and host details
4. Application Process
- Download and complete the visa application form.
- Gather all required documents as listed above.
- Submit your application at the nearest Ghanaian Embassy or Consulate. Some missions accept applications by mail.
- Pay the visa fee (see section 5).
- Track your application and collect your passport when ready.
5. Fees & Processing Time
– Single‐entry visas typically cost between US$60–$100 depending on nationality and visa type.
– Multiple‐entry visas are more expensive and require additional documentation.
– Standard processing time is 5–10 working days; expedited service may be available at an extra charge.
6. Additional Notes
- Always carry a copy of your visa and passport page while in Ghana.
- Extensions are possible via the Ghana Immigration Service but must be applied for well before expiry.
- Check for any COVID-19 health requirements or travel advisories before departure.
- For long-term stays (work or study), secure the appropriate residence permit after arrival.
